Scene from a Kulobi Wedding

After a 3 hour car journey filled with German ‘80s pop music to the house of the groom, a translator, in Kulob. After being fed a plentiful amount of osh (a rich rice dish) shurbo (a substantial soup or stew) and halva (a dense confectionery made from the mush of oilseed and different add-ons) it was time for the dancing to begin. In the melting sun, the trumpets blared and the drums beat out a classic Kulobi rhythm as the groomsmen and family and danced, observed by the groom and his best man, standing gracefully on a kurpacha, in front of a huge suzani.
