In Karakalpakstan, an autonomous region of Uzbekistan, the graves of the Mizdakhan cemetery rise in the evening light. This archaeological necropolis complex adjoins the remains of the Zoroastrian fortress of Gyaur-Kala, dating back to the 4th century AD. It is one of the oldest and most visited pilgrimage sites in Karakalpakstan, owing to the purported presence of Adam’s tomb ; a legend rooted in Zoroastrian mythology, which places the grave of the first man, Keyumars, at the Mizdakhan cemetery.
