Every winter, Lake Son Kul in Kyrgyzstan is completely icebound. At night it is not uncommon for the temperature to drop below minus 25 degrees. The mountains on the opposite shore are more than twenty kilometres away. Credit: Pierre-Armand Dussex (France)
