Train life

A mother and her son sit in the half-empty third class (known as platzkart) of the Kazakh AstrakhanAtyrau train. Due to airfares often too high, the train remains the most used means of transport for Kazakhs travelling long distances. Given the vastness of Kazakhstan, journeys are often very long, lasting up to several days. Therefore, a train journey is the best way to discover Kazakh customs and get a glimpse of their daily life.
