Prigorodny has long been a peaceful holiday resort for the inhabitants of Tselinograd, a secondary town about 20 kilometres away. In 1998, Tselinograd became Astana, and then Nur-Sultan, the flamboyant capital of Kazakhstan, and Prigorodny went from being a holiday village to a suburb by default.

Rangkul is located in the middle of a desert at 3800m altitude, off the main road. Here there is no running water or electricity, as in all the villages of the region, but also no commerce. Livestock is essential for survival. The scattered tufts of grass that grow here are transformed by the cattle into dairy products and meat, which make up more than half of the inhabitants’ diet. So when the herd returns from distant pastures, the desert comes alive for a few minutes.
