The lake has been an important summer vacation hot spot since the Soviet times with much of the sanatoria and hotels concentrated in the area around the town of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cholpon-Ata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cholpon-Ata<\/a><\/strong>. After the dissolution of the URSS, tourism has drastically fallen in the area, due to political and ecnomoical instability.
