Each week, we let you know the latest from the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the news<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hello from Novastan! A very happy Easter Monday to those who celebrated yesterday. This week, we&#8217;re looking at flights between Russia and Central Asia, new laws in Uzbekistan, Turkmen contracts, and more&#8230;<br><br>Regular<strong> direct flights from Russia to several countries including Tajikistan and Uzbekistan<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/novastan.org\/en\/tajikistan\/russia-resumes-flights-to-uzbekistan-and-tajikistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have officially resumed<\/a> (ENG). Passengers will have to follow strict measures to minimise transmission of Covid-19.<br><br><strong>Uzbekistan has made &#8220;insult and slander&#8221; of the<\/strong> <strong>president a criminal offense<\/strong> punishable by up to five years in prison. The changes to the criminal code also include up to five years in prison for public calls for mass disorder and violence and up to 10 years for doing so in groups using media, telecommunication networks, or the Internet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/uzbekistan-crime-online-insults\/31181519.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RFE\/RL reports<\/a> (ENG). This comes in an election year for Uzbekistan: President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is expected to run for a second term this October.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>The <strong>Franco-Italian aerospace maufacturer Thales Alenia Space<\/strong> is currently the <a href=\"https:\/\/novastan.org\/fr\/turkmenistan\/thales-alenia-space-en-bonne-position-pour-obtenir-800-millions-deuros-de-contrats-au-turkmenistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only company in the running<\/a> (FR, paywall) to build a second Turkmen communication satellite. It also wants to design two observation satellites.\u00a0<br><br>The <strong>railway line connecting the Uzbek cities of Bekobod and Qo\u2018qon (Kokand)<\/strong> <strong>via Tajikistan<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/novastan.org\/fr\/economie\/une-ligne-entre-tadjikistan-et-ouzbekistan-bientot-electrifiee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">should be electrified<\/a> (FR) by the end of 2021.<br><br><strong>Izzat Amon<\/strong>, an activist for migrants&#8217; rights in Russia, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/rus.azattyq.org\/a\/russia-tajikistan-migrant-laborers-activist-charges\/31178552.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>deported to Tajikistan<\/strong><\/a> (RU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Covid-19 in Central Asia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As of 5 April 2021, there have officially been<\/strong> <strong>440,539 cases,<\/strong> <strong>5,337<\/strong> <strong>deaths and 404,826<\/strong> <strong>recoveries. In more detail:<\/strong><br><br>&#8211; Kazakhstan : 255,028 cases, 3,110\u00a0deaths, 225,256 recovered<br>&#8211; Kyrgyzstan: 89,153\u00a0cases,\u00a0 1,507 deaths, 85,217 recovered<br>&#8211; Uzbekistan: 83,050 cases, 630 deaths, 81,135 recovered<br>&#8211; Tajikistan: 13,308 cases, 90 deaths, 13,218 recovered (no new cases according to official figures)<br>&#8211; Turkmenistan: 0 cases, 0 deaths, 0 recovered (no cases according to official figures)<br><br><strong>Uzbekistan\u2019s vaccination programme<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/novastan.org\/en\/uzbekistan\/mass-vaccination-programme-starts-in-uzbekistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has started<\/a> (ENG) in Tashkent, Nukus and 12 regions across the country.
