The ubiquitous representations of Lenin in the Soviet space are, in a way, part of local folklore. What role could they play today in the former republics of Central Asia? That of a historical monument to a past that must not be forgotten? An outdated relic in the era of independent state-building? A devalued work of art? While the statue of Lenin has just been dismantle in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, it is still possible to admire this enormous bust of Lenin in Istaravshan, Tajikistan. It should be noted, however, that Istaravshan is the new name for this 2,500-year-old city, which until 2000 was called Uroteppa.
