A few watermelons await their fate in the entrance hall of  Kokil Dara Khanagha.  

Kokildor-Ota Khanaka in Termez, in the far south of Uzbekistan, was originally a resting place for wandering Sufi dervishes and other Muslim scholars. Founded in the 16th century by Abdullah Khan II, khan of Bukhara, the building’s design is strongly influenced by the city’s cultural ties to Afghanistan.

A shiny Yuri Gagarin stands tall in the city center of Karaganda. This monument dedicated to cosmonauts has been erected in 2014 to coincide with the 80th birthday of Gagarin. The city of Karaganda sits in the middle of the endless kazakh steppes. These steppes have been the landing site for many cosmonauts coming back from the International Space Station. Usually, Returning cosmonauts stay in Karaganda some days to recover and complete health checks, before being able to go back home.

In 1948, a devastating earthquake struck Ashgabat razing the city to the ground with estimated casualties equivalent to almost 10% of the Turkmen population at the time. A gigantic sculpture consisted of a bull holding the Earth from which the mother with a golden child, presumably president Turkmenbashi himself, was erected in a memory of this tragic event.

Nourjol Boulevard is the main pedestrian artery of Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan. The great Báıterek Tower that stands in the middle of the city has become the symbol and the main attraction of the Kazakh capital. Around the monument, bars and ice-cream vendors try to give a little bit of humanity to this great cold complex.
