The capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe is historically a city of commerce. Located on the legendary Silk Road, its name means “Monday market.”

Even today, markets are still very much a part of city life. Fine fabrics, fruits, a variety of spices… head to the Bazaar, the commercial heart of the city, to stock up on supplies!

The image captures a moment in the bustling Khujand Market in Tajikistan , where the energy is high and people are rushing, yet there’s a sense of peacefulness in the chaos.

Amidst the fast movements and noise, a young boy runs to the stairs, sits down, and begins to cry.

Though the reason is unknown, the scene is deeply touching. In the middle of all the activity, he takes a moment to close his eyes and reflect. Before long, a sense of calm returns, and he is smiling again.

The picture contrasts the market’s hectic pace with the boy’s quiet moment of self-reflection.

Built in 2014 to replace the ‘obsolete’ street markets, Mehrgon is a sumptuous three-storey shopping complex showcasing products from every region of Tajikistan. The Tajik government sees it as an architectural monument designed to boost national pride. (June 2023).
