Ominous clouds rise over the empty canyon during a late afternoon hike. In the Almaty region, close to the famous Charyn canyon, a few other canyons are completely unknown to tourists. Even locals barely adventure themself there. Kurtogay is one of them. There is no path but eventually you’ll end up in an amazing canyon all to yourself.

One of the beaches of the northern shores of the Lake Ysyk-Köl with snow-capped mountains in the background. The lake has been an important summer vacation hot spot since the Soviet times with much of the sanatoria and hotels concentrated in the area around the town of Cholpon-Ata. After the dissolution of the URSS, tourism has drastically fallen in the area, due to political and ecnomoical instability. However, in recent years efforts have been made to revamp the touristic offer, in order to accomodate a new generation of national and international tourists.

Two tourists take a selfie in the Kyzylkup valley, in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau Oblys. This striking rock formation is popularly known as the Tiramisu Gorge. This is no coincidence, since the differently colored clay layers are strongly reminiscent of the famous Italian dessert.
