The day draws to a close in Khiva. The setting sun highlights Itchan Kala, the old city museum, and in particular the Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasah. Khiva has been selected as a flagship destination for 2026 by National Geographic, thanks in particular to the significant efforts made in building tourist infrastructure.

For visitors entering Itchan Kala through the Eastern Gate, or Polvon Gate, one of the first monuments to be discovered is the Kutlugmurad Inak madrasah, named after its founder. Its stalls are still in use, but are now exclusively for tourists. The Kaltaminor and Jummi minarets can be seen along the street.

For over a century, Khiva was the main slave market in Central Asia. Among them were several thousand Russians, who are said to have been behind the capture of the city by the Imperial Russian Army in 1873.

Konya Ark, the old fortress, doesn’t look its age. Built in 1686-1688 and remodelled at the very beginning of the 19th century, it now has a smooth face thanks to very recent restoration work. Konya Ark is one of the outstanding monuments of Itchan Kala, the old town of Khiva. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city has been the subject of tense negotiations for years between defenders of its historic heritage and the tourism and property industries.

In 2021, all the houses that lined the wall of the old city of Khiva, Itchan Kala, are razed. When contacted, an architect present on site cited the presence of termites as a pretext.

Despite criticism, the Uzbek government continues to remodel tourist sites, as currently in Bukhara or Tashkent.
